Norway’s Stave Churches

Norway has twenty-eight stave churches throughout Norway.  Many of these churches were built between 1150 and 1350 AD.  A stave church is made of wood, and the construction is made out of poles (“staver” in Norwegian), hence the name.   I visited twenty of the twenty-eight churches standing.  There were a few that really touched me including the Lomen Stavkyrkje, Hore Stavkyrkje, Eidsborg Stavkyrkje, Heddal Stavkyrkje, Hopperstad Stavkyrkje, Undredal Stavkyrkje and Hoyjord Stavkyrkje. I will focus on five of those churches today.

Heddal Stavkyrkje

Heddal Stave Church is a stave church located at Heddal in Notodden municipality. It’s Norway’s largest Stave Church: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlrKtXJwId8

This was my all-time favorite church! I highly recommend going inside. The hours are from 10:00 am. to 17:00 p.m. The prices are: Single ticket NOK 80,  Group ticket (min. 15 pers.) NOK 70,  Student ticket: NOK 50

Hoyjord Stavkyrkje

Høyjord Stave Church is a stave church in the village of Høyjord in Andebu in the municipality of Sandefjord in Vestfold og Telemark county: https://youtu.be/CKNlFRNqD0Q

A parish church in the middle of no where. The Norwegian people who attended the noon service were incredibly hospitable. I highly recommend attending one of their mid-week church services.

Undredal Stavkyrkje

Undredal Stave Church is a parish church in Aurland Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Undredal, on the shore of the Aurlandsfjorden. https://youtu.be/AXLzt7Ug7wo

The smallest stave church in Norway. The scenery was breathtaking. Try and spend the night if you can.

Lomen Stavkyrkje

Lomen Stave Church is a stave church located in the small village of Lomen in Vestre Slidre municipality in Innlandet county: https://youtu.be/GlROJib8_SQ

I was not able to enter the stave church but the views from the outside was outstanding. The church is without electric light and heating, and it is only used for weddings and church services during the summer season

Hore Stavkyrkje

Høre Stave Church is a stave church located at Ryfoss in the municipality of Vang in Innlandet county: https://youtu.be/1iyGgYxDwIY

The church was built in 1179 a.m. and  there are a number of graves under the church

Locations for Norway’s 28 Stave Churches. I strongly believe they are the 8th Wonder of the World. More information can be found here:https://www.visitnorway.com/typically-norwegian/stave-churches/
